When Ulysses Press reached out to me in December 2016 about writing this book, I knew it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. A book on pocket knives? And I get paid? While it wasn't the easiest of times in my life, I felt this was something I could handle. I loved the subject and felt I needed this sort of entry into the world of book writing and publishing. It's also a great example of how small things can lead to big thing.
The folks at Ulysses found me via an article I wrote about Getting to Know Your Grandpa's Pocket Knife, written a few years earlier and was actually one of the first articles I wrote for Wolf & Iron. At the time of writing the article, Wolf & Iron didn't have the audience or the years we do now, but I decided to reach out to Case knives all the same. I kindly asked if they could send along a selection of pocket knives for me to photograph and write about, saying I would send them back after I was done. To my surprise, they agreed, and praised the article once it was complete (plus I got to hang onto a pristine Seahorse Whittler, mentioned in the book). Not only did that article generated some traffic, but it gave me a boost of confidence as well. Fast forward a few years later and it gave me the opportunity to yet again venture into the subject of pocket knives, this time in a nostalgic and informative tome.
Thanks to the fine people at Case for their belief in what I had going on, before I really had much going on, and thanks to Ulysses for the opportunity to put passion to paper.
